Before heading out for a big game or event, there’s more to consider than just your tailgating setup or game tickets. Your vehicle is what gets you there on time and without any unexpected breakdowns. A quick vehicle inspection can prevent frustrating issues, ensuring that you’re not sidelined by car trouble when the real action begins. So, whether you're making a road trip to the stadium or just heading to a friend's house to catch the game, make sure your vehicle is ready to hit the road with these essential pre-game inspection tips.
One of the first things you should inspect is your tires. Tires are your vehicle’s only point of contact with the road, making them a critical safety feature. Check for any visible signs of wear, such as low tread or uneven wear patterns, which could indicate a need for alignment or rotation. Also, don’t forget to check the air pressure. Low tire pressure can reduce fuel efficiency and affect your vehicle’s handling, especially if you’re driving long distances to the game.
Use a tire gauge to ensure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (pounds per square inch), typically listed in your vehicle’s owner manual or on the inside of the driver’s door. Don’t skip the spare tire either—it’s your backup if something goes wrong!
Your vehicle relies on several essential fluids to operate efficiently. Before heading out, take a few minutes to check them. First up, the engine oil. If your oil is low or dirty, it’s a good idea to top it off or change it altogether. Clean engine oil ensures your engine stays lubricated and performs well under pressure.
Next, check the coolant level in the radiator. Low coolant can lead to overheating, especially if you’re stuck in traffic on your way to the game. Other fluids to check include the brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Ensuring that these levels are in the right range will help you avoid sudden mechanical issues on the road.
There’s nothing worse than turning the key only to hear that dreaded click of a dead battery, especially when you’re in a rush to catch the game. Avoid this hassle by inspecting your battery before you leave. Look for any corrosion on the battery terminals and clean them off if necessary. If your battery is more than three years old or showing signs of weakness, it might be time to replace it.
Testing your battery’s charge can be done with a multimeter or battery tester. If the voltage is below 12.4 volts, it’s a good indicator that your battery might not have enough charge left to reliably start your vehicle.
Driving to and from the game can often involve early morning or late evening travel, meaning visibility is key. Ensure all your lights—headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals—are working properly. Not only is this crucial for your safety, but it’s also a legal requirement. Replace any burnt-out bulbs ahead of time to avoid unnecessary risks or even fines.
Have someone stand outside the vehicle to check that your brake lights and signals are functioning correctly while you activate them from the driver’s seat.
If you want to avoid a fender bender on your way to the game, make sure your brakes are in excellent condition. Listen for any squeaking or grinding noises, which could indicate worn brake pads. Also, pay attention to the feel of the brake pedal. If it feels spongy or less responsive, it may be time for a brake service or fluid replacement.
Don’t forget about your windshield wipers. Clear visibility is essential for safe driving, especially if the weather takes a turn for the worse. If your wiper blades leave streaks or skip across the windshield, replace them before heading out. It’s a small investment that can make a big difference in visibility and safety.
